My research lies at the intersection of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Information Visualization (VIS). I am passionate about dismantling barriers to sensemaking by empowering people to understand and reason about their data, and to communicate their insights with others. I work directly and collaboratively with practitioners and domain experts through a user-centred design approach. Drawing on theories from cognition and perception, I develop interactive tools, techniques, and frameworks that address concrete domain problems, while also advancing the principles and practice of HCI and VIS.


Biography

Michael Glueck is a Manager of Research Science at Facebook Reality Labs, where he leads a team of cross-disciplinary researchers to create compelling next-generation interaction experiences. Prior to joining Facebook, Michael was a Lead Senior Research Scientist & Co-Founder at Chatham Labs and a Principal Research Scientist at Autodesk Research. His research has investigated interactive visualization techniques to help domain experts make sense of their data, addressing challenges including 3D interaction, time series navigation, and data annotation and analysis handoff. He earned his PhD in Human-Computer Interaction at the University of Toronto, where he developed ontology-based visual analysis tools to help doctors and medical researchers study rare genetic disorders.

Michael has published more than 20 articles at premier venues in the areas of Human-Computer Interaction and Information Visualization, and he holds over a dozen patents. His work received best paper awards at ACM SIGCHI 2016 and Graphics Interface 2013, and honourable mention awards at IEEE VAST 2017 and ACM SIGCHI 2016. His doctoral work garnered awards at two major academic conferences in 2017: Best PhD Dissertation Award presented at EuroVis and the Bill Buxton Best Dissertation Award presented at Graphics Interface.
